Tan Yu Mu graduated with Distinction from the Diploma in Music (Performance) at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (NAFA) in 2024, studying under Dr. Nellie Seng. He was awarded the San San Music Merit Award for his outstanding results and is currently in the final year of his Bachelor of Music (Honours) degree at NAFA.
His musical journey began in Malaysia with Hau Ping Ping, and later continued under Pamela Krakauer and Clarence Lee, before finding his artistic home in Singapore.
Yu Mu has earned accolades both as a soloist and collaborator. His achievements include Second Prize at the 2022 Music Singapore International Piano and Violin Competition (Artist Category), Gold Award at the 2021 Asia Arts Festival (Diploma & above), and earlier competition successes such as Gold Awards in 2018 Inter-Junior College Piano Ensemble Competition and 2016 Malaysia National Youth Music Competition. In 2025, he was named Best Piano Accompanist at the NAFA Vocal Competition, recognizing his sensitivity and excellence in ensemble playing.
Yu Mu is also an active accompanist with Voices of Singapore and has worked with singers, choirs, and instrumentalists across a wide range of repertoires. He has honed his artistry through masterclasses with renowned artists including Brian Hsu, Konstantin Soukhovetski, and Melvyn Tan.
With over four years of teaching experience, Yu Mu is dedicated to nurturing independent, thoughtful musicians. His teaching philosophy emphasizes musical awareness and self-directed learning, encouraging students to think critically, listen attentively, and express themselves with confidence.
